Meet Sonia
Sonia Catalina Gomez, LCSW (she/they/ella)
Hola! Soy Sonia. As a therapist, I am human first in that my work is informed by my lived experiences.
I identify as a Latina. I was born in Central America, immigrated to the U.S at age 6 where I lived as an undocumented person prior to qualifying for DACA. Eventually, I completed the citizenship process. In 2020 and again in 2024, I became a parent of two. Since then, I have been working to break deep generational cycles through my own individual and parenting practices.
My experience includes working with children and adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression (including suicidal ideation), trauma, neurodivergence, and executive functioning difficulties. Throughout my time in the hospital environment, I worked with higher-needs populations in an inpatient as well as in an outpatient setting. I continued my work in the child welfare system as a therapist for families involved with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). When I transitioned into private practice, my experience expanded to include young, middle-aged, and older adults dealing with challenges from obsessions, compulsions, burnout, shifts in identity, and complex trauma.
My approach is compassionate, curious, and collaborative. My lens is multicultural, feminist, and intersectional. I value working with cycle breakers and empowering those who have been marginalized and oppressed by the systems around them. In my practice, I use education to reclaim your power through daily choices. I intentionally build a space of trust and safety to establish a strong foundation in our therapeutic relationship. I also provide avenues for establishing connections outside of therapy to create a community that best meets your needs.
Specialized trainings include: Parent Management Training (PMT) an evidence-based treatment for parents of children with disruptive behavior, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard treatment for those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
